Health + Informational Updates

COVID-19 AND RUDY'S

The safety and well-being of our employees is our highest priority.  We are paying close attention to CDC guidance and especially the local public health recommendations for employers in each of the communities where we operate. Above all, stay calm and practice rigorous hygiene!

Based on current guidance from public health officials, we do not expect to have to outright close shops, but everyone in each community must do their part to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

WHO SHOULD STAY HOME?

The symptoms of COVID-19 include coughing, fever over 100.4* F and shortness of breath. Employees experiencing these symptoms, or with family/household members experiencing these symptoms, should stay home and consult a health care provider on the phone.

Please also contact HR in addition to your shop manager.  HR will consult with the local public health office in each case when an employee displays the COVID-19 symptoms. You may reach them at HR@rudysbarbershop.com or (206) 726-4916 x 200

Employees with other symptoms of illness, including runny nose or malaise, should stay home until symptoms improve.  Employees who report to work but display symptoms of illness will be asked to go home immediately.  The attendance policy is waived until further notice as it relates to call outs for illness.

Those employees with severe immunity challenges should follow the recommendations of your health care providers regarding contact with the public during this period.

Finally, if you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed by this situation, we have two resources to recommend:

  • All employees may utilize the Employee Assistance Program through Cascade Centers at no cost.  To access their resources, visit cascadecenters.com or call 800-433-2320
  • Employees who are enrolled in the Premera medical plan have a variety of options for more long-term therapy resources.  Learn more at  https://blue.premera.com/BHsupport/

HYGIENE REQUIREMENTS

Regular hand-washing for 20+ seconds with soap and warm water, and not touching your face, are the key steps to avoiding infection.  Stylists should wash hands between clients, and when returning from breaks. Front desk and managers should aim to wash hands once an hour or after making physical contact with others.  Color gloves may also be worn by front desk employees who are concerned about money handling, etc.

Routinely wipe down common surfaces with Lysol or bleach wipes:

    • Doors/doorknobs
    • Broom and dustpan handles
    • Garbage can lids
    • Washer and dryer doors and lint trap
    • Phones
    • Computer keyboards and mouse
    • All counters and retail shelves
    • Sinks
    • Breakroom surfaces and seats
    • Etc.

Regularly wipe down personal cell phones

Use popsicle sticks to remove pomade and other puck products

Replace capes frequently

Wipe barber chairs with a disinfecting wipe or Lysol spray, follow immediately with a warm water and mild soap solution then dry with a towel.  Allowing any bleach residue to dry on vinyl will cause it to crack and age prematurely. PLEASE take both steps when wiping down chairs!

Wash towels on hot and dry on hot—this is a change from normal protocol.

WHAT WE'RE ASKING OF CLIENTS

Rudy’s website now has a banner encouraging clients to stay home if ill, and our appointment confirmation and reminder emails contain the same.

If a client is in the shop and is visibly ill, ideally, the message will go like this: “Although in normal circumstances we’d be happy to see you today, we are making every attempt to help contain germs and it appears you are a little under the weather.  Let’s reschedule your appointment for next week?”

HEALTH INFORMATION CONTACTS

Public Health authorities advise that individuals should not go to the ER unless symptoms are acute.

Premera’s nurse line, for those on Rudy’s medical plan, is 800-841-8343.

For employees who are not covered by medical insurance, here are some cost-free resources if you need to speak to a health care provider about potential COVID-19 symptoms:

  • King County hotline for those who have been exposed to COVID 19: 206-477-3977.
  • WA State Dept of Health Coronavirus hotline: 800-525-0127.
  • Multnomah County Health Dept: Dial 2-1-1 for coronavirus questions
  • NY State Coronavirus Hotline: 888-364-3065
  • LA Dept. of Public Health: Dial 2-1-1 for coronavirus questions
  • Atlanta Public Health: 866-782-4584

The states of New York, California, Oregon and Washington have announced that residents with certain medical insurance plans (including Rudy's) will be able to receive coronavirus testing free of charge, if warranted.  This means any employee on Rudy's health plan (outside GA, for now) will be able to get tested and seen for potential COVID-19 without out-of-pocket costs.

PUBLIC HEALTH SEATTLE + KING COUNTY QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATIONS

Self-quarantine means staying at home and away from others and self-monitoring for symptoms, including doing daily temperature checks. Individuals in the following categories should self-quarantine for 14 days per the CDC:

Recent travelers of areas to countries with widespread or ongoing community spread.

Close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases. For example, Barry’s wife, Shelly was recently confirmed to have COVID-19. Barry should self-quarantine for 14 days per the CDC, monitor symptom, and notify his healthcare provider and Public Health if he becomes ill.

WHO DOES NOT NEED TO SELF-QUARANTINE?

Close contacts, such as family members or roommates, of people who have had close contact with a confirmed case do not need to self-quarantine. For example, Joni is a healthcare provider who has had contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case at work. She does not have any respiratory symptoms. Her son, Liam, does not need to self-quarantine and does not need evaluation or testing for COVID-19. However, if Joni becomes sick with COVID-19, Liam will need to self-quarantine.

Rudy’s will manage any shop quarantine issues on a case-by-case basis.
