WE INTERVIEWED “CHICKEN DECK,” THE FOUNDER OF SCREAMIN INC. SKATEBOARD SCREEN PRINTING IN HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA.
Q: Where were you born?
A: Torrance California
Q: Where do you live now?
A: Huntington Beach California
Q: Why?
A: Grew up around here surfing & skating, never left.
Q: How old were you when you picked up your first skateboard?
A: Around 7 years old.
Q: The human body is resilient, what was your most memorable accident/break? Do you have a “battle scar” from boarding that you are most proud of? That every time you see it reminds you of “good o’days”?
A: I’ve had some pulled ligaments, fractured & broken bones, and lots of bruises, but no real visible scars from skating.
Q: What’s the “Chicken” all about?
A: I had a red Mohawk years ago, and I have a but of a beak, one of my friends said I looked like a chicken and that was it, been stuck with it since that day.
Q: Who dead or alive inspires you?
A: Anyone who paves their own way and doesn’t follow the masses.
Q: Do you think the board has anything to do with performance?
A: Definitely! There is a big difference in the way different boards work. From what the board is made of, to how the board is made, the shape of the board, the wheel base, the nose and tail length, all these things affect how a board performs.
Q: As a small business owner, what do you love about your job?
A: That I’m the boss, and I’m working with skateboards and art!
Q: What do you hate?
A: That I’m the boss, and all the responsibility that comes with it.
Q: Who was your first customer?
A: Steve Rocco, SMA Rocco pision
Q: Is the journey (as a small business owner) as rewarding as you thought it would be?
A: There are times when it’s the best thing ever, and then there are times when it just sucks, but over all I’d say yes it has been as rewarding as I imagined it could be.
Q: Why is it important to keep production in here?
A: So I can keep doing what I love! No, really we need to keep production here in the USA because this is where skateboarding was born. Everything has been sent out to be made overseas or in Mexico, and the USA is suffering because of it. Yeah, products are cheaper, but so many people are out of work, they can’t afford to by the cheap imported products anyway. If the government and the states don’t ease up on all over priced workers comp, and other taxes and fees, small business is going to disappear, and that would really suck!

WHY HAND PRINTED BOARDS ARE BETTER
Many companies use the HEAT Transfer Process to apply their graphics. In order to apply a HEAT Transfer A Skateboard is run between two rollers under immense hydraulic pressure. One of the rollers is heated to 300 Degrees So the board is subject to this Tortures process three to four times in order to get the transfer to stick. it’s like throwing your New Skateboard in the Oven at 300 Degrees and then running it over with your Car 3 times! Essentially Beating it Down before you ever snap your first Ollie! It’s used before you even break the seal.
